Data
The fine balance between quantity and quality of information is difficult to strike. The structure below allows me to filter data in a hierarchical fashion and create a repository of vetted material.
Feedly - http://feedly.com/brunoswerneck
- Purpose: Aggregate blogs and publications I would normally access directly.
- Method: In Feedly I work through my most read collections first (Investment Banking--> Financial Technology --> Venture Capital).
- I use the extension within Feedly to save pieces to Pocket for later perusal.
- Tip: I highly recommend sharing your Feedly collection publicly. It offers others access to your curated blogroll and helps you reference your primary sources more easily.
Twitter - https://twitter.com/brunoswerneck
- Purpose: Daily data download and real-time news.
- Method: I only access Twitter through lists in order to segment my information (FinTech Community, FinTech People, FinTech Venture Capital). This helps me contextualize what would otherwise be a noisy stream of consciousness into a neater, thematic process.
- Lists are managed through Twitlistmanager and analytics through SocialBro.
- Hootsuite is used for content management and Buffer for post scheduling.
- Nuzzel crowdsources top stories.
- I favorite Tweets I enjoy, would like to respond to, or contain interesting links both for social signaling ("thanks for checking me out" / "I am, in fact, checking you out") and information aggregation. Links are automatically saved to Pocket using If This Then That.
- Tip: I unfavorite Tweets once a week for two reasons: First, for clean presentation (I think of Twitter as a dynamic micro-blog). Second, to respond to material I may have missed.
- Pmarca's shoutout stays put because, well...pmarca.
AngelList - https://angel.co/bruno-s-werneck and
CrunchBase - https://www.crunchbase.com/person/bruno-werneck
- Purpose: Aggregate information regarding venture capital and startups.
- Method: I read through the CrunchBase Daily to get a sense of top funding rounds and check out the Recent Follow Activity once a week for more in-depth coverage.
- AngelList provides robust investments, transactions, and positions coverage and a daily news roundup.
- Tip: I favorite organizations or people I would like to track in CrunchBase. This adds relevant organizations, people, and products to my news stream and, through CrunchBase Sync, automatically does the same in AngelList.
Quora - http://www.quora.com/Bruno-S-Werneck
- Purpose: Source primary material from content leaders. Quora is much more useful as a publishing platform and branding tool than an information site.
- Method: I generally do a weekly scroll through my Top Stories to follow or answer interesting queries. I use the Topics function to focus on relevant subject areas.
- Tip: The search algorithm uses read articles to improve its recommendation and news feed functionalities.
- Purpose: Temporary repository for online materials.
- Method: I work through my Pocket queue on a periodic basis. I delete articles I do not wish to keep and favorite then archive those I do. Favorited articles are snipped to my Evernote .Inbox folder automatically using If This Then That.
- Tip: I use Feedly to source new information when data service is available and Pocket to review the information when it is not.
If This Then That - https://ifttt.com/p/brunoswerneck/shared
- Purpose: Connect various resources and tools.
- Method: Save articles in Pocket from favorited articles on Twitter
- Tip: I highly recommend sharing your If This Then That recipes publicly. It offers others access to your links.
Evernote
- Purpose: Permanent database for all electronic materials.
- Method: Articles are either snipped through Pocket using If This Then That or directly in Feedly using the Evernote extension.
- I send all articles into the .Inbox folder and sort them once a month. During the sorting process I reread pieces that are particularly relevant and tag them according to their primary subject matter. I use secondary tags such as Blog, Follow-Up or Tweet depending on future actions I may want to take with the piece.
- Tip: I use the share functionality to create public folders for financial technology and venture capital. This allows others to access and search through the materials I have aggregated.
